Movie Night: The Road To Nashville

well my makeshift posting schedule lists saturdays as “movie night” (among other things I scribbled down). For now we will make it movie night. This movie below is available for free to watch on Hulu and while cheesy as all get out (from 1967, it must’ve been done by the same folks who did The Beverly Hillbillies and Green Acres), it has some great performances on it. Check it out fans of classic country. Featuring Waylon (that’s his clean cut mug in the preview below), Johnny Cash, Porter Wagoner, Hank Snow, The Carter girls, etc…

Waylon Jennings – Renegade, Outlaw, Legend (documentary)

Today (well yesterday now) was the anniversary of Waylon Jennings birth. In honor, here is a great documentary that is on Youtube (albeit split into 7 seperate clips). While you’re at it, check out some of the twitter shenanigans regarding “things waylon wouldn’t say”

Waylon Jennings – Outlaw Shit (Video)

I have monday’s listed as “Youtube Mondays”….is that right??…..I guess so, we’ll roll with it for now anyway.

I’m stealing this from something Twangnation posted on the twitter, I thought it was a killer reworking of an old favorite. Brings the song up to near epic proportions…love the emphasis on the lyrics….really sets this thing off. Reminds of a Mickey Newbury arrangement.

Texas Week & Songs about Dallas

I’m dubbing this “Texas Week” at ATS because well, I’m in Texas. Dallas to be specific, though next weekend I will be in Austin. So I thought we would kick this off with some songs about Dallas specifically (because there are A LOT of songs about Texas).

So here are a few of my fave songs about Dallas, TX.  What are some of you guys favorite songs about Texas, or even Dallas specifically?

Johnny Winter – Dallas Forget what you think you know about Johnny Winter and listen to this. Fact is his first couple albums are some of the best raw and dirty Texas blues you are likely to find.

Charlie Daniels Band – Trudy Forget what you think you know about Charlie Daniels too! His pre-Urban Cowboy stuff is some of the best damned Southern Rock you are likely to find. This song is about getting locked up in Dallas after a bad game of poker

Ray Wylie Hubbard (with Jack Ingram) – Dallas After Midnight Even though Jack Ingram is now pseudo-pop country, at one time he was a “Texas Country” icon.  Here he is with Ray Wylie singing about some ill-conceived criminal activity late at night in Dallas

The Flatlanders – Dallas (Live Version) of course I would choose this, it’s the quintessential song about Dallas. This is a live version that is absolutely smokin’….I mean man…best version of this song I’ve ever heard (watch video of it here)

Jack Ingram (with Steve Earle) – Dallas this is Jacks version of the classic Flatlanders song above, with Steve Earle along for the ride. See I told you he was legit at one time

Waylon Jennings – People In Dallas Got Hair I don’t know what that is supposed to mean Waylon…but yes, I can confirm that people in Dallas do indeed have hair….except for that one guy walking his bull terrior down Harwood.

Waylon Jennings – Live 1975 – Sugarloaf, Maine 8/2/78

In my opinion there’s nothing better to usher in the summer than some rowdy and raucous outlaw country (OK, well maybe Neil Young too). So in that spirit here is a damn fine Waylon show from 1975. Now let’s take a look at that date. Waylon had just released what some call his greatest album (that’s not made up of Billy Joe Shaver songs :P ) Dreaming My Dreams, and was on the verge of releasing the album that would shoot him into popular culture along with Willie Nelson, the seminal Wanted! The Outlaws. That’s the backdrop of this show……if that’s not the peak of his career it is somewhere damn near it. Great sound on this one, great song selections with just a couple technical problems (during Only Daddy That’ll Walk The Line and Clyde) that are easy to overlook, especially since you get to hear Waylon talk shit to a guy in the crowd who threw a rock onstage during Bob Wills is Still The King.

Waylon Jennings – Mental Revenge (Live 1966)

Some vintage Waylon here. One of my favorite songs of his.

Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver, Kimmie Rhodes, & Kris Kristofferson – Outlaw Country Live From Austin TX

In Honor of my favorite show on saturday nights, I present to you a recording of one of my favorite episodes of Austin City Limits.

Recorded in 1996, this honky tonk supergroup gave us a performance much like what you would expect this gathering to sound like on any one of their front porches. They sit around joking singing songs back and forth, trading licks….trying to one up the next guy. Highlights on this disc include well all of it, but specifically the middle part where they play a game of one upmanship with spiritual songs, the all-together sing along of “on the road again”, and my favorite…..Waylon’s “I’d have been out of jail”. Give it a listen or two.
