Winner of the V-Roys contest… Travis Hill, congrats! Thanks everyone for commenting, the answer of course was the band’s original name was The Viceroys but they had to shorten to The V-Roys due to the reggae band with the same name. I had never heard the Viceroy cigarettes story though…could it perhaps be a combination of both?

Really I think the V-Roys is a much better name so I think it worked out. To tie it back to reggae, enjoy this video of The V-Roys backing Steve Earle doing their version of  The Slickers classic song Johnny Too Bad.

Some Steve Earle over at Hillbilly Helper

If you haven’t noticed in some of the comments, our friend Bigredspirit has loaded up quite a few killer Steve Earle shows over at

Some good stuff over there, and thanks!

News: Todd Snider, Scott Miller, Wrinkle Neck Mules, etc…

Well there’s a lot of stuff to talk about here. First off, that Ribbonpigeon album from the last post, well they emailed me to let me know that they just changed their name to The Only Sons and are working with a label for a distribution deal with that album and the one prior. Can’t wait for that.

How about some Todd Snider news? Todd’s new album The Excitement Plan is now available for pre-order. Due out on June 6, the $40 dollar deluxe pre-order box set features some cool items. Like each set will be signed and numbered by Todd (limited to 500), a DVD of the Peace Queer movie, a bonus disc of songs, 3 stickers, and even a Todd Snider flag! Pretty sweet.

Now on to Scott Miller. Those of you like myself who got the Appalachian Refugee demo CD AND pre-ordered the new album back in december (or was it november?) may have noticed a glaring omission from the album…..that omission was the sublime song Appalachian Refugee. Well Scott has heeded his fans call and decided to include the song on the street version of the album (due out Next Tuesday). Now here is the cool part, since the folks who pre-ordered the album did not get this track, he made it available for download on his site. This is a highly recommended download. Also while you are there check out his new site, he finally updated it to reflect the computer age :P

Wrinkle Neck Mules….I know there are a few fans of them out there :) . Well good news as they have recorded over 30 songs and are thinking of releasing possibly a double album or some kind of box set sometime this year. Read about it here.

Some odds and ends. The new Steve Earle album kicks all kinds of ass, The Steeldrivers are in the studio working on their followup, Magnolia Electric Co. have a 7″ EP coming out April 18th featuring 4 unreleased songs, and Jimbo Mathus just put out a new album called Jimmy The Kid that is somehow impossible to buy but you can listen to samples on his myspace page.

Songwriter’s Circle, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 10-2-05 (Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Joe Ely, Dave Alvin, Verlon Thompson)

Hot damn! This is a good one folks. Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Joe Ely, Dave Alvin, and Verlon Thompson just sitting around on stage trading songs and stories. Only thing that tarnishes this show a little is when Steve Earle dares to play a song of his then new album “The Revolution Starts…Now!”, but hey that can be excused….I mean how was he supposed to follow “Desperados”??? Put this one on, turn it up loud, and wish you were there. Shows like these make me really appreciate all the tapers out there. I probably don’t say it enough…..actually I don’t think I ever have on here….but thanks guys….thanks to all the tapers out there who capture these glorious shows. Especially thanks to the ones who know how to do it right.

Steve Earle & The V-Roys – Johnny Too Bad (Video)

Now see, this is how you mix country and reggae. Not that aweful Willie Nelson album….what the hell was he smokin….oh wait.

Steve Earle – Radio Sessions 2002-2007 (Is There Anybody Out There)

I put this together from 4 different radio shows I had. The outcome is a pretty damned good listen if say so myself. Starting in 2002 in support of Jerusalem, going into 2005 in support of Revolution, and ending with two shows from this year one in preperation, and one in support of Washington Square Serenade. Some nice older tunes on here too. All in all it’s a pretty nice set of tunes, mostly acoustic and laid back with the occasional record scratching on the last show….still don’t know how I feel about that, but it’s not near as bad as it seems like it should be. There are some very interesting interview segments throughout as well.

Also look for Steve in an upcoming play based on Howard Zinn’s “People’s History of The United States” (a great read if you haven’t read it).

Steve Earle – Austin City Limits Festival 9-15-07

I guess some of you may have been wondering what that last post was all about…..well it was foreshadowing man! Here we have a super fresh Steve Earle boot from less than a week ago. Pretty interesting too, as the first half is mostly solo and older stuff (and features and excellent tribute to TVZ at the beginning I might add). While the second half is stuff off his upcoming album “Washington Square Serenade” and feature his wife (Allison Moorer) on a couple tracks, and a DJ providing backbeats on almost all of them. That’s not as weird as it sounds either, it actually blends in with the songs pretty well, and before you know it, you forget it’s there. I do love the fact that the DJ is named appropriately, “DJ Duke” :) .

This means something…..this is important…

Steve Earle – Live in London 5-13-96

OK, so I’m back online….so without further delay, here is a damned good Steve Earle boot. Sounds like this was some kind of radio show, not really sure. All you need to know is the sound is excellent and he was touring in support of his then just released masterpiece “I Feel Alright”…..need I say more.

Steve Earle – Magnetised Motherfuckers & More Magnetised Motherfuckers

OK, as promised….FINALLY! It took me a while to upload this as I was having technical differcations (to create a Bushism), but here it is….the massive Steve Earle rarites box. Comprised of 4 discs that are jam packed with Steve Earle heroin & high cholesterol goodness….that is, these tracks are pre 9/11 Steve, so we all know what that means (good stuff).
