smoke ‘em if you got ‘em

Well I was going to make a full blown comp for the purpose of this highly dubious doobius made-up holiday, but fittingly I was too lazy and/or forgot. So I will just throw a few songs up here as sort of a mini-mix you can enjoy in whatever manner you see fitting.

First up, one of my favorite songs, is one that captures a special kind of sadness that I’m sure many are familiar with (not Willie). Off their debut album Lost In The Ozone

Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen – Seeds And Stems (Again)

Next we have the Funland version of the Old 97’s song Stoned. They give the song a bit more of a punk edge, and features Centro-Matic’s Will Johnson on drums. Off the long out of print Stoned/Garageland split single (that you can get right here)

Funland – Stoned

This is a jazzy bluesy number from Asylum Street Spankers off the album Spanker Madness….where all the songs share this theme

Asylum Street Spankers – High As Can Be

Here is a brand new song, off the just released EP Distilled from Roanoke, VAs finest Blue Moonshine. Stop by in Roanoke if you’re ever in need of a toke from a trucker on his way Johnson City, TN. Also, if you stoners want something of an easter egg, google the band name.

Blue Moonshine – Seeds and Stems

Here’s one from knoxville’s finest, and ex-V-Roys member Mic Harrison. Off the album Right Side Of The Grass

Jason Boland – When I’m Stoned

Finally we have one of the best, and one of the most appropriately named songs. This is from Hank Flamingo which was Trent Summar’s first band. If anybody happens to have a copy of their long out of print album, I would love love love to have it.

Hank Flamingo – The Dope Smoking Song

If you gotta have some more, head on over to The Alternate Root for a killer mix over there. Maybe next year I will put these and some other choice songs into a full blown mix….if I remember of course…

Bill Kirchen – Hammer of The Honky Tonk Gods (Vid)

Tonight I’ve been listening to alot of Commander Cody records, and it reminded me of this killer Bill Kirchen track from the album of the same name a couple years back. Such a great damn song. If you don’t know, Kirchen was the guitarist for the original (and best) Commander Cody line-up. He is one of my favorite guitar players of all time, and this song demonstrates that. If you really want to trip out, check out his solo version of Hot Rod Lincoln. Kirchen has a new album out called Word To The Wise. I haven’t heard it yet, but if it’s half as good as Hammer of The Honky Tonk Gods it’s worth hearing.

Commander Cody – Hill Auditorium – Ann Arbor – Michigan – 1969

Damn, it’s been about a month since my last post…..sorry guys just haven’t had a chance. This one has actually been in the can for a while but I’m just now getting around to posting it. This is pure bar room honky tonk. Nothing less, nothing more. Just listen to Kirchen blast out those classic classic country guitar licks…..always puts a smile on my face. Call this a primer in rowdy country rock for those less fortunate :P
