Happenings in and around Blacksburg/Roanoke the next few days

Last weekend I forgot to inform everyone of the Down By The River festival in Roanoke featuring Jay Farrar on Friday and Neko Case on Saturday. That was kind of a big deal for the area….of course I couldn’t attend either show, but I heard Farrar did a great set (haven’t heard from anyone who went to Neko yet). So as to keep on top of things, I thought I should talk about some of the things going on around the area this weekend:

  • Fri-Sat-Sun: Giles Fiddler’s Convention at Whitt-Riverbend park near Pearisburg, VA. This is the inaugural Giles Fiddler’s Convention, and will feature competitions, workshops, dances, etc… (basically what you would expect from a fiddler’s convention).
  • Sat: Ralph Stanley at The Pulaski Theater in Pulaski, VA. Ralph Stanley with The Clinch Mountain Boys, this is sure to be a great show, and I’m kind of surprised to see him playing in Pulaski. Word is they recently renovated the Pulaski Theater so hopefully they get a good turnout to keep bringing in more artists.
  • Sun: Blue Moonshine at Fork in The Alley in Roanoke, VA. Blue Moonshine have a standing gig at Fork In The Alley every other sunday, with the Acoustic Endeavors (whom they share a mandolin player with) playing the alternating Sundays. What that means is no matter what sunday you go, there will be good music.
  • Tue: D. Charles Speer & The Helix w/ Zachary Cale and The Black Twig Pickers at The Cellar in Blacksburg, VA. This one I’m pretty excited about. I’m a big fan of The Black Twig Pickers already (expect a post on them sometime soon). D. Charles Speer & The Helix are a country-rock honky-tonk type band, the Black Twig Pickers are so old time they make the Carolina Chocolate Drops look like Marilyn Manson…..found this vid below of a collab between the two:

That’s mostly the pickers there, here is D. Charles from the same show

smoke ‘em if you got ‘em

Well I was going to make a full blown comp for the purpose of this highly dubious doobius made-up holiday, but fittingly I was too lazy and/or forgot. So I will just throw a few songs up here as sort of a mini-mix you can enjoy in whatever manner you see fitting.

First up, one of my favorite songs, is one that captures a special kind of sadness that I’m sure many are familiar with (not Willie). Off their debut album Lost In The Ozone

Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen – Seeds And Stems (Again)

Next we have the Funland version of the Old 97’s song Stoned. They give the song a bit more of a punk edge, and features Centro-Matic’s Will Johnson on drums. Off the long out of print Stoned/Garageland split single (that you can get right here)

Funland – Stoned

This is a jazzy bluesy number from Asylum Street Spankers off the album Spanker Madness….where all the songs share this theme

Asylum Street Spankers – High As Can Be

Here is a brand new song, off the just released EP Distilled from Roanoke, VAs finest Blue Moonshine. Stop by in Roanoke if you’re ever in need of a toke from a trucker on his way Johnson City, TN. Also, if you stoners want something of an easter egg, google the band name.

Jason Boland – When I’m Stoned

Finally we have one of the best, and one of the most appropriately named songs. This is from Hank Flamingo which was Trent Summar’s first band. If anybody happens to have a copy of their long out of print album, I would love love love to have it.

Hank Flamingo – The Dope Smoking Song

If you gotta have some more, head on over to The Alternate Root for a killer mix over there. Maybe next year I will put these and some other choice songs into a full blown mix….if I remember of course…
