Sunday Service: Billy Joe Shaver – Winning Again

Here is a new feature here where I will be posting some kind of vaguely religious song every Sunday morning for all you sinners and repenters out there alike. I was going to kick this off last Sunday and tie it in to the 4th of July Picnic by posting Willie’s essential version of Amazing Grace. Of course you guys probably all know that song anyway. So I will go with a song off Billy Joe Shaver’s 2007 “gospel” album Everybody’s Brother. This song is classic Shaver and features Marty Stuart trading verses with Billy Joe.

I also chose this song cause Billy Joe Shaver did win his court case in which he shot a man in the face in a bar outside of Waco and was found not guilty. Keep singing about Jesus Billy Joe…I think it’s working out for you.

Billy Joe Shaver – Winning Again

Billy Joe Shaver – Seste Calende, Italy July 25th 1997

Here is a damned fine show from Billy Joe Shaver. Recorded in Italy in 1997 almost 10 years ago to the day. Features his late son and guitar virtouso Eddie Shaver, and man does he shine. I’ve always been a big fan of both Billy Joe’s songwriting and Eddie’s “Don Rich meets Stevie Ray” guitar style. If your not a BJS fan and you like rockin’ country, download this…..cause he is the master……Billy Joe Shaver is a living legend….he IS outlaw country. Without him there would never have been such a thing. Anyway, I could go on for days about how much love and respect I have for this man….just download this show and maybe you will too.

Billy Joe Shaver – Black Rose (Austin City Limits 1984)

Billy Joe & the late Eddy Shaver ripping it up on this one. One of my favorite BJS songs.

Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver, Kimmie Rhodes, & Kris Kristofferson – Outlaw Country Live From Austin TX

In Honor of my favorite show on saturday nights, I present to you a recording of one of my favorite episodes of Austin City Limits.

Recorded in 1996, this honky tonk supergroup gave us a performance much like what you would expect this gathering to sound like on any one of their front porches. They sit around joking singing songs back and forth, trading licks….trying to one up the next guy. Highlights on this disc include well all of it, but specifically the middle part where they play a game of one upmanship with spiritual songs, the all-together sing along of “on the road again”, and my favorite…..Waylon’s “I’d have been out of jail”. Give it a listen or two.
