Happenings in and around Blacksburg/Roanoke the next few days

Last weekend I forgot to inform everyone of the Down By The River festival in Roanoke featuring Jay Farrar on Friday and Neko Case on Saturday. That was kind of a big deal for the area….of course I couldn’t attend either show, but I heard Farrar did a great set (haven’t heard from anyone who went to Neko yet). So as to keep on top of things, I thought I should talk about some of the things going on around the area this weekend:

  • Fri-Sat-Sun: Giles Fiddler’s Convention at Whitt-Riverbend park near Pearisburg, VA. This is the inaugural Giles Fiddler’s Convention, and will feature competitions, workshops, dances, etc… (basically what you would expect from a fiddler’s convention).
  • Sat: Ralph Stanley at The Pulaski Theater in Pulaski, VA. Ralph Stanley with The Clinch Mountain Boys, this is sure to be a great show, and I’m kind of surprised to see him playing in Pulaski. Word is they recently renovated the Pulaski Theater so hopefully they get a good turnout to keep bringing in more artists.
  • Sun: Blue Moonshine at Fork in The Alley in Roanoke, VA. Blue Moonshine have a standing gig at Fork In The Alley every other sunday, with the Acoustic Endeavors (whom they share a mandolin player with) playing the alternating Sundays. What that means is no matter what sunday you go, there will be good music.
  • Tue: D. Charles Speer & The Helix w/ Zachary Cale and The Black Twig Pickers at The Cellar in Blacksburg, VA. This one I’m pretty excited about. I’m a big fan of The Black Twig Pickers already (expect a post on them sometime soon). D. Charles Speer & The Helix are a country-rock honky-tonk type band, the Black Twig Pickers are so old time they make the Carolina Chocolate Drops look like Marilyn Manson…..found this vid below of a collab between the two:

That’s mostly the pickers there, here is D. Charles from the same show

This is a great feature… esp since I’m heading back home to the Burg in late july — would love to see this be a regular thing!
