Townes Van Zandt & Blaze Foley – Tribute To Clyde Buchanan 5-20-1984

Had some interest in Blaze Foley after the Blaze documentary vid, so here is a cool little recording of Blaze and his best friend Townes Van Zandt. The best I can tell is this was either a radio show, TV show, or just a benefit concert for Clyde Buchanan who was an Austin songwriter (and that’s about all I know about him). What’s cool about this is the little interviews in between the songs. Townes tells a nice story about Pancho & Lefty and a couple of cops. This also features one of my favorite Blaze tunes “Oval Room” which is as relevant now as it was then.

Clyde Buchanan is my oldest brother and I have been searching for years to find tapes, videos, recordings, etc. of his life as an Austin Picker from 1970 to 1985. One video I would so love to have is him performing at the AWH beer garden in the late 70s. And a tape if available of Blaze, Jimmie Dale and others singing at his wake at Wilke Clay on South Congress. I can provide details about “Bill” as the family knew him and have 45 records, sheet music, original songs and many photos, posters of him and Gary P, Jimmie Dale, Jerry Jeff, TVZ, and others. PLEASE contact me. Thanks so much, Shae

      Sharon,
I am not wwll known at all, but played with Clyde at the 290 Cafe outside of Austin for about the last year of his life. I am from Virginia and he was from Tennesee, so we got along well. He was a fine man and a good friend. I have one of the prints of him that was signed by Austin musicians and had some cassette tapes of us playing, but I can’t find them as of now. I left Texas in 1989 and live back in VA. I play bluegarss these days. I look back on those days with fondness and remember Blaze playing there as well. Take care,
      Dan

Clyde Buchanan is my dad. I love him and still grieve for his loss every day. I was a “Daddy’s girl”. :) I have the old VHS tape of the tribute filmed at the loading chute but the quality isn’t that great so I was extremely happy that someone had posted it online! I just wish whoever posted it wouldn’t have cut out so many of the scenes showing my mom Dorothy (Dottie) Buchanan introducing the acts.
Anyway, Hi Aunt Sharon! Long time no see. Hope all is well. If anyone wants to contact me I live in Ontonagon, Michigan with my cat. I’m on Facebook. Thank you all for keeping my Daddy’s memory alive. God Bless. :)

I also have a copy of the tribute done to him and also have all of his reel to reel tapes of his music , even the master he recorded at Willie’s studio in Perdanales. My youngest sister has all of his sheet music. I live in Ontonagon, Mi. and Jessica lives in Cheyenne, Wyo. Thanks to all who keep dad’s memory alive like Bon said! =)
