Coffee Creek – Cicero’s Basement – June 11th, 1992

It’s time for the site to get back to what it does best, which is post killer bootlegs, and this Coffee Creek is one I’ve been meaning to post for a long time.

If you are not familiar with Coffee Creek, they were the side project of Uncle Tupelo & Brian Henneman of The Bottle Rockets (of course this was before he formed that band). The band went by the name Coffee Creek so they could play their favorite dive Cicero’s again, as Uncle Tupelo had become such a draw they had outgrown the venue. The band played all covers, and mostly classic country. Vocal duties were primarily handled by Henneman and Farrar, with Tweedy singing the CCR song “Wrote A Song For Everyone”. The band only played 4 shows over the course of 3 years and the project dissolved when Uncle Tupelo itself dissolved in 1993. As we all know, Tweedy formed Wilco, Farrar & Heidorn formed Son volt, and Henneman formed The Bottle Rockets. According to Uncle Tupelo fan site factorybelt.net, the band was thinking of recording an album prior to the split, but the only official recording is a cover of Hank Snow’s “Movin’ On” for the compilation 20 More Smash Hit Explosion something or other.

If anyone has a copy of that, I would love to hear it!

I know it’s not nice to piss and moan about a freebie, but this is definitely not a keeper. Sounds like it was recorded on a cellphone, with all the inherent problems. Too bad, cuz the band is absolutely killer…I’d love to see them someday, but that ain’t likely to be happenin’…

That cover of “Movin’ On” is on “20 More Explosive Fantastic Rockin’ Mega Smash Hit Explosions” (yeah, nice name!), credited to Uncle Tupelo. Copies show up on ebay every once in a while.

I think there may be better-sounding sources for the Coffee Creek boot to be found, and another show was also recorded…no, I don’t have it. Yet.

Coffee Creek’s (or Uncle Tupelo’s) version of “Movin’ On” isn’t the Hank Snow song. It’s a cover of the theme from the TV show “Movin’ On”, which was a #1 Country single for Merle Haggard. I can e-mail an MP3 if you’d like.

Fantastic, thanks for posting this, I saw them about a year later, 7/30/93 – possibly their last show, but at the same venue, Cicero’s. The gigs in the basement, were generally pretty rowdy, but you could sit at a table and be comfortable down there, but not for the CC shows; tables/chairs were out, they knew they wouldn’t have the room, and it was a benefit for the flood victims here in St. Louis that year. So with that, and UT getting so popular, they really packed them in, it was just wall to wall people, with us standing about 3/4 of the way back staring at the back of peoples heads! ;) So not the best viewed show, but a great gig, for a good cause, and a really fun night.

    Thanks again for posting this!

  • I do like the way you have framed this matter and it does indeed present me personally some fodder for thought. Nevertheless, coming from what precisely I have witnessed, I basically hope as the commentary pile on that individuals continue to be on point and don’t embark upon a tirade involving the news du jour. Yet, thank you for this fantastic piece and whilst I can not really go along with it in totality, I regard the perspective.

  • Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your post seem to be running off the screen in Chrome. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with internet browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. The style and design look great though! Hope you get the problem resolved soon. Thanks
